Landing a vision for Kāpiti together

Throughout 2023/24 your councillors are making it a priority to work with communities on a vision that will enable a future that is sustainable and guide Council planning now, and over the next couple of decades.

As a district, we need to come together to talk about the change we want to see and to set aspirations for Kāpiti.

Your feedback will help to inform our vision. We need our vision to show our community’s future in a way that anyone living in Kāpiti can quickly grasp and appreciate – what our environment will look like and how future generations will live daily.

A clear district-wide vision will help guide Council planning, decision making, programmes, services, and advocacy, for decades to come.

Have your say

There are a number of ways to have your say, both online and in person.

1. Tell us what matters most to you by sharing your ideas:

  • What would you like life in Kāpiti to look and feel like in 2060 and beyond?

2. Drop a pin on our map, and tell us what we need to focus on, change or improve:

  • Need now (tomorrow)
  • Need soon (over the next couple of years)
  • Need in the future (5 years plus)

3. Something on your mind? Ask us a question.

4. Have your say on our Vision Kāpiti 'key topics':

  • Our councillors' 10 strategic priorities
  • Housing
  • Health and wellbeing
  • more coming soon...

Kia ora, Greater Wellington Regional Council provides planning for transport networks across our district, including managing and funding all public transport options. We work with them to advocate for improved services to, from and within Kāpiti. You are able to get in touch with them via their ‘contact us’ options on their website. We will also incorporate your comments into our Vision Kāpiti process.

  • Share This is not a question, but a plea for a simpler engagement process. How do I have a say when it comes to the Councils 10 priorities? It does not seem to be possible to do this on/via your website, and that is why I am resorting to this avenue. The website looks like it's designed for superficial shallow interaction with teenagers, but does not cater for any substantial input. In terms of the top priorities, I suggest that the importance of basic services (e.g. water, waste and transport) is not reflected in the list. Generally, the projects lack measurable objectives and are really just a collection of verbiage. Each priority should be able to be measured annually (at least) in terms of whether agreed objectives have been met In my view, the accessibility of affordable health services -while important - is not Councils responsibility. The same applies to Housing Access. Council should ask itself where the funds will come from. Ratepayer are already paying sky high rates. Lastly, I would have thought that we have a good relationship with our Maori citizens. It is not clear why we need to change any aspects of our relationship, such as developing a new partnership agreement. Thanks for your comment. We want to ensure that our community has a chance to have input on the topics that matter most to them, not everyone will want to contribute to every topic – and that’s fine. The Council’s Top 10 Priorities are on the Have Your Say website (haveyoursay.kapiticoast.govt.nz/strategic-priorities) – our website for community engagement – and people can also email us at visionkaptit@kapiticoast.govt.nz. Thanks for contributing your thoughts on the priorities, we have added your feedback into the process.

Thank you for your question. Council has an important role in bringing community groups together and advocating for positive education, health, housing and safety outcomes for our community. Our roles in district planning and infrastructure provision also support these services and how they are planned into the future. We hope you have your say to help create a vision that truly reflects the aspirations of our community.

Thank you for your question. Vision Kāpiti is being led by our elected members as part of their commitment to making sure people have plenty of opportunities to get involved in Council decision-making. It is being supported by staff in our strategy and growth, and communications and engagement teams with specialised support engaged on an as needs basis only where the work cannot be done internally. Vision Kāpiti is being supported through existing baseline funding. It is a 3-year programme of work that will set out our collective vision for the future, and how we will get there through Council planning and activity between now and the horizon of 2060.

Councillors have been asking the community what they think about their ten strategic priorities, which will be the focus for the next three years and will be used to allocate investment in our Long-term Plan 2024–34 . Formal consultation on the Long-term Plan is planned for early 2024.

Kia ora Amy, thank you for your question.

The Council has an Economic Development Strategy that includes initiatives to attract new businesses and employers to establish in Kāpiti, and at the same time support their growth and establishment.  We recently appointed a person fulltime in this role.  The support we provide is tailored to the needs of businesses, for example the need to expand into larger premises, or gain access to more capability or workforce.  We have worked with various sectors to formalise networks of support, identifying their priorities.  A key focus is working with tourism businesses, and food and beverage producers.  We are expanding our focus into the technology and business start-up sector as well.  In addition, we support the economy through marketing to attract visitors who spend over $115m a year and we invest in eight major events throughout the year.

We know paying rates can be tough for some people. Rates help pay for services and facilities for the Kāpiti community that are either critical or beneficial to the community as a whole. We’ve received strong feedback from our community that while people would prefer lower rates increases, they do not wish to see services and facilities cut to reduce rates.

If people are facing hardship in paying their rates, there are options to help such as rates remission, rates rebates or postponement of payments. You can find more information about getting help with your rates here: Help with your rates - Kāpiti Coast District Council (kapiticoast.govt.nz)

    Stewie asked 8 months ago

There is currently no intention to lower speeds to 30km/h districtwide. Government rules introduced last year required road controlling authorities to develop and consult on Speed Management Plans. We are required by legislation to lower the speed limit in priority areas, including around schools. The area immediately around schools will be transitioning to either permanent or variable 30km/h limits from next year, with changes required to be completed by 2027.

For more information, please see: Speed limit changes confirmed for Kāpiti - Kāpiti Coast District Council (kapiticoast.govt.nz)
