Kāpiti is a great place to live, and a generally safe one too. Council’s quarterly Residents’ Opinion Survey showed that throughout 2021/22, 90 percent of residents agreed that their community was resilient and safe. While this is great to see, we know there are areas of growing concern. Council has an important role to play in making Kāpiti a safer place to live.
What is safety? To us, safety is more than just preventing crime. It includes:
Safety in public spaces
Safety in the home
Safety at work & school
Safety in emergency events
Safety on the road.
Council's role in keeping our community safe
Council plays an important role in improving community safety. It does this in a number of ways, from investment in infrastructure (eg, lighting in public spaces, road safety), building relationships with safety providers (eg, New Zealand Police) and key stakeholders (eg, schools and retirement villages).
There has been an increase in reported crime rates, but our reported rates are better than the national level. Crime statistics show an increase in reported crime in Kāpiti over the past few years, which has stabilised in 2023. A trend being seen nationally. Our reported crime rate is 28.2 percent below the national rate (37 victimisations per 10,000 people, compared to 51.5).
