How will coastal hazards affect you?

We are a Coastal Advisory Panel of iwi partners and community representatives who have been asked to guide our community response to the impacts of sea level rise on our environment, our community and Council Infrastructure. We are nearly at the end of project and want to hear from you before we finalise our recommendations for Council’s considerations.

We have drawn on robust, transparent and accessible technical, social and economic evidence, indigenous knowledge, and wider community input to develop our draft recommendations.

Once finalised, our recommendations will help guide the development of District Plan provisions to manage coastal issues and develop an approach to help the district deal with coastal hazards in the future.

Feedback on draft recommendations

We're reaching out to you, our Kāpiti Coast District communities, to find out how you think our district should respond to coastal hazards from sea-level rise.

We want to hear your thoughts on:

  • Our draft preferred pathways for coastal adaptation
  • Our draft optional thresholds for adaptation planning; and
  • Our recommendation for the approach for the future coastal district plan change.

Either come along to one of our in-person engagement pop-ups or fill out the survey below.

We've created a series of factsheets to provide further information about:

Our preferred pathways have been developed based on the unique typography and communities within the district. For that reason, the 38km of the district have been divided up into adaptation areas and then further focused into management units.

We've put together these info sheets to make it easier to understand what the CAP is proposing for each of the pathways. including the costs for each. Please refer to the guide on how to read the pathway info sheets.

  • CAP's draft recommendations for coastal adaptation

    The Coastal Advisory Panel (CAP) want to hear the community’s feedback on their draft “preferred pathways” for coastal adaptation prior to finalising their recommendations for Council’s consideration. You will also be able to submit your views on the CAP’s optional thresholds for adaptation planning and their recommendation on the approach for the future coastal district plan change.

    If you live in Paekākāriki we’d love to hear what matters to you about your coastline and your views on adapting to the impacts of sea level rise on your part of the Kāpiti Coast. The Takutai Kāpiti Coastal Advisory Panel has started looking at options for adapting to coastal erosion and inundation due to climate change for this area. The panel will meet with the community again for your feedback on their recommendations later in the year.

    If you live in Raumati we’d love to hear what matters to you about your coastline and your views on adapting to the impacts of sea level rise on your part of the Kāpiti Coast. The Takutai Kāpiti Coastal Advisory Panel has started looking at options for adapting to coastal erosion and inundation due to climate change for this area. The panel will meet with the community again for your feedback on their recommendations later in the year.

    Draft recommendations for the Northern Adaptation Area (Ōtaki, Te Horo, Peka Peka)

    The Takutai Kāpiti Coastal Advisory Panel (the Panel) is reporting back to the community with their draft recommendations for the Northern Adaptation Area (Ōtaki, Te Horo and Peka Peka). 

    To complete this survey, you will need to refer to the Northern Adaptation Area pathway information package. You do not need to answer all the questions, just the ones you want to. 

    The panel wants to hear if you think they’ve got it right or if there is anything else they need to consider. It’s your chance to provide further input before they start costing the pathways and make their recommendations to Council.

    If you live in Waikanae or Paraparaumu (our Central Adaptation Area) we'd love to hear your views on how we adapt to coastal hazards. Your views will help us as we start looking at options for adapting to coastal erosion and inundation due to climate change for this area. We will meet with the community again for your feedback later in the year.
