Consultation has concluded

Work to revamp the Waterstone Reserve playground in Paraparaumu will begin in spring or early summer 2023, with the aim of opening before Christmas.

Following community consultation in late 2022 a concept plan for the upgraded playground has been developed.

The playground will include a range of equipment to keep youngsters interested and engaged, including a tower, slide, climbing equipment as well as a shaded picnic area.

Open space manager Gareth Eloff says the design was also informed by feedback received at two engagement sessions held at the park and has been tested with a focus group of local families.

“We’re excited to see this new upgrade come to fruition and know it will provide a lot of entertainment for local kids, not to mention a fresh resource for parents,” Mr Eloff says.

“We’ve opted to create two play zones linked by a covered area. This will help in what is a pretty wet area and allows for a covered sitting area in the middle – great for supervisors.”

Mr Eloff says the construction delay is not ideal but necessary.

“We know there is a lot of interest in getting this work done, but we need to wait until the ground is drier before construction can begin.

“We had a very wet winter last year, followed by a wet summer, and attempting to build a playground on a soggy worksite is not good practice. We’ll be onto it as soon as conditions allow.”

Consultation has concluded

Each year we carry out a regular renewal programme for playgrounds, as equipment gets near the end of its shelf life. Anything that can still be used is either kept in place or relocated.

We aim to create playgrounds that are accessible, fun, varied, and cater for a wide range of abilities. Our goal is to design interesting playgrounds and open spaces that meet the needs of both children and their caregivers.
