Dream big about the future of culture and creativity on the Kāpiti Coast

We are developing a Culture and Creativity Strategy 2023-2028 to help guide, direct and support our future investment in arts, culture, creativity and heritage. Together, we have a once-in-a decade chance to dream big to create an even more amazing place to live, work, visit and be.

For more than 1000 years, culture and creativity has been intrinsically linked to where we came from, who we are now and our journey into the future. The strategy will embed and reflect whakaaro Māori, and the wawata (the aspirations) of the mana whenua iwi of Kāpiti.

To date, we’ve had conversations with around 70 people involved in arts, culture, creativity and heritage across the district. Now, we want to hear from you. What are the some of the great things that are happening in this space, the challenges we face, and what are your big ideas to make arts, culture, creativity and heritage even more awesome.

Keep an eye out for our "idea catchers"
From Monday 26 June we'll have a number of "idea catcher" blackboards dotted around our communities for you to express your ideas and to dream big on. If you see one, feel free to share your thoughts and don't be shy about being creative.

Attend a co-design workshop
Later in July we are hosting a number of co-design workshops where you can help shape the three pou of the strategy. If you are interested in participating in a workshop email artsadmin@kapiticoast.govt.nz.

    On the Kapiti Coast, original music artists have nowhere to share their music! There are of course pub venues, but these are not family friendly, they require you to spend money on drinks and food, and are often loud and late, thereby excluding a big chunk of the community. Most venues expect bands to play Cover songs - these cover bands are not supporting original music development - in fact they are taking slots from those that do write their own music.

    Arts, culture, creativity and heritage reflect and grow our Kāpiti culture. Arts projects are an opportunity to show our dedication to te Tiriti o Waitangi, to enliven dull suburban landscapes and to provide opportunities for our people of all ages to have a sense of community. There's so many ways arts and culture can enrich our Kāpiti lives from cool artwork on electricity boxes or lamp posts through to celebratory installations and events such as Matariki.


    With our aging population it'd be cool to see something that aged care homes can participate in to connect with the wider community.

    Arts add richness and texture in our lives. Arts are great for building community. Good examples are Anam Cara Pottery Event, the Kite Festival and of course the indigenous film festival.

    While Kapiti calls itself a centre of excellence for the arts, it doesn’t always come through. We have the Arts Trail. That could be developed into an Arts event that goes from one weekend to the next with performances, both in theatres and on the street, mucus events. Workshops, all running in the week between the weekends.
    Also utilising each event to piggy back other art events from it. So Siri g music week we also have mini exhibitions, music workshops etc. Public art is great too. It connects us to our community and makes us unique.
