A Speed Management Plan for the Kāpiti Coast

Following consultation and amendment, our first Speed Management Plan for the Kāpiti Coast has been adopted by councillors. You can read more about the consultation on our website.

During consultation, there was a strong submission made to greatly expand the a 30km/h limit beyond the proposed zone.

The submission, prepared by the Paekākāriki Community Board and endorsed by Paekākāriki School, Paekākāriki Playcentre, the Paekākāriki Scout group and 82 individuals, asked ‘...that the proposed 100m boundary being applied to the proposed school zone be extended to a 1km radius for delivery before the end of 2023 and for the speed limit changes to apply at all times’.

As this was not an option in the original consultation, we are now requesting feedback on this from more in the community as well as other key stakeholders like emergency services and public transport providers.

We consulted directly with Paekākāriki on two new options, this closed for feedback on 15 September.

1. A 30km/h speed limit on all Paekākāriki roads including Ames Street, plus traffic calming infrastructure on The Parade.
2. A variable (immediately before and after school) 30km/h speed limit on roads within 100m of Paekākāriki School.

Both options include traffic calming infrastructure on Wellington Rd near Paekākāriki School.

The remainder of the Speed Management Plan has been adopted by Council and the final Paekakariki option will be submitted to Council for their consideration and approval in October.
