Our vision for Maclean Park is a destination for all; a place to meet, play, relax and connect with Kāpiti Island, our heritage and environment.
Over summer we shared the skatepark concept design and asked you whether we had got it right. Since then we have worked on a number of changes based on your feedback. We have:
Moved the flow bowl closer to the roadside to take advantage of the existing landscape and improve the flow between upper and lower street areas.
Moved the jump-box to a central location with two height options plus an integrated wallride and manual pad. This means that more of the old asphalt banks have been removed, with more grass areas included.
Made the Pyramida standalone feature with a rail and kerb ledge
Added more standard ledge and wallride options
Added more detail to the upper street area
Added two spines to the mini-ramp – 4ft and 3ft
Added improvements to the learners' area next to the basketball court
Final Decision on Bowl Design – ‘Bowl Poll’
Over late July and early August, we asked you about one final aspect of the design - whether to include a flat wall in the bowl or not. There were some good arguments for and against each option, and based on the overall comments and polling, the preferred option was option 1 - include a flat wall extension. The bowl will also have a 7ft radius all around, with a 5ft height in the shallow end and 7ft in the deep end. The deep end will have pool coping and a small roll-in.
The two options were:
Option 1 –Include a flat wall extension as seen in the design consulted over the summer
Offers a variety of transitions inside the bowl
Can help with practicing airs and gaining speed for the deep section
Option 2 – Continue the same transition around that section
Provides a more consistent transition
Continuous coping allows forlonger grinds

How we got here
We’re delivering Stage 2 of the Maclean Park development plan [PDF 1.08 MB]. The project includes upgrading our much-loved skatepark, and over the past few months we’ve gathered lots of input about what's important to you for the upgrade.
The Stage 2 upgrade of Maclean Park also includes building a new fully accessible amenity block with more toilets and new showers and preparing the ground for a future older persons’ recreation areas and water plaza.
What we consulted on
From April to August 2022 we ran a survey, ideas board and community consultation sessions to gather ideas for the skatepark from the community. The results of the survey are available to view in the Documents section. Over summer 2022-23 we shared the concept design developed by specialist skatepark designers RICH Landscapes and we listened to your comments and suggestions. Since then, we've been working with an expert user group to refine the design and include as many of your suggested changes as we could.
Some ideas we haven't been able to include in this design (such as a full pump track and wooden half-pipe), and we'll carry these ideas into future skatepark upgrades elsewhere in the district - Waikanae skatepark will be next in a couple of years.
