The future Waikanae Library
We're investigating options for the permanent Waikanae Library and Service Centre replacement, following the closure of the building in November 2018. We’re committed to having a library in Waikanae, so we’ve been working with a Project Advisory Group made up of community members, iwi, and business and school representatives, which confirmed the preferred location for the future library is in Mahara Place.
Share your ideas for a new Library/ Service Centre below.
Your comments will inform our Long-term Plan bid for a new or upgraded facility.
Note: responses collected through community events and drop boxes located at libraries and Council Service Centres are shown under the name 'Community voices'. We have included these for transparency and reporting purposes.

What matters most about a new library for Waikanae?
2 months agoKate Robertson2 months agoMake a new Waikanae Library happen, it is a priority!
Libraries are great places, they provide all sorts of different things to different people, they help to make towns feel healthy and happy. It is vital Waikanae has a good sized, comfortable, light and bright library full of a wide range of books. I live in Waikanae and I go to the library twice a week to fill up our reading piles, it is currently frustrating to have such a limited range of books in the 'pop up'. My 8 year old loves books and I want him to be able to walk or bike to his local library and choose his own books, for the library to have space for him to sit and read.
0 comment1Community voicesabout 2 months agoWaikanae needs a much larger library as befits the population and the high % who are members of the library.
Public use copiers are essential and also self-issuing machines. An information centre for use by local as well as visitors is also essential. A library should be the hub of the community and the present library situation is disgraceful and totally unacceptable.
0 comment3Destination Waikanae2 months agoAn exciting redesign of the old library, with the already landscaped "library plaza", will give us back the heart of our town centre.
Nearly 1100 residents signed a Destination Waikanae petition for work to start urgently to rebuild our library. The comments from a large proportion of them talked about how important this facility was, and will be again, to young families. KCDC owns this site. You have it in your power to make it happen really quickly. Please don't take another two years to decide - "Our library is an integral hub for a connected community With so many young families moving to Waikanae we need a community library "First rule of property ownership: Maintain what you already own "The old library was a social hub; the children's area was a wonderful place to meet other families and for children to develop a love of reading "We need all its services back, for people who can't afford technology and for people to have somewhere to go to avoid social isolation "There is nowhere for community groups to meet in the town centre: modern libraries provide this, hotdesks for people who don't have an office, space for children and families to play and learn, a good selection of books for browsing and discovering new authors instead of having to know what you want and order books as we do now"

0 comment0Community voicesabout 2 months agoThe local Waikanae Library is very important for the community.
It is a source of information for all, especially those who aren’t mobile or can’t use technology. The staff are always so friendly and helpful. Plenty of space and a pleasant aspect makes for an enjoyable visit.
