Emissions Reduction Strategy
We know that for many people in the Kāpiti Coast district, climate change is an important concern.
We also know that people and businesses across Kāpiti are already taking action to reduce their emissions by shifting to low emissions transport options, electrifying their homes and businesses, and minimising waste.
Our proposed Emissions Reductions Strategy aims to accelerate these efforts by supporting our community to create a more prosperous, healthier, low carbon Kāpiti. It's success relies on our collective efforts – at home, at work and in the community – and we need your input to make sure the final strategy reflects our communities values and priorities.
Benefits of reducing emissions
Reducing emissions means playing our part to lessen the impacts of a changing climate, and it also comes with many benefits including:
- household cost savings
- better health outcomes
- increased energy security from less reliance on imported fossil fuels
- more efficient and productive ways to do business
- more compact and better-connected communities.
We want a future for Kāpiti where energy bills are lower, homes are warmer and drier, less waste goes to landfill, and everyone has access to low carbon transport options. This includes affordable public transport, electric and low emission vehicles, and being able to safely walk and cycle around Kāpiti, which helps cut road congestion.
We're also committed to showing climate leadership by reducing our own organisational emissions. We’ve successfully reduced Council’s organisational emissions by 72% since 2010. These improvements have helped to lower operating expenditure and improve service delivery.
Our aspirational goal is a net zero Kāpiti by 2040
View visual summary of our strategy and its proposed principles, pathways and partnerships to guide next stepsNet zero means reducing emissions at source (known as ‘gross’ emissions) and then ‘offsetting’ the remainder by capturing and storing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, such as by planting trees. Our proposed strategy focusses on reducing gross emissions as much as possible to maximise the benefits of decarbonisation.
This draft strategy sets the direction for achieving our aspirational net zero goal through:
- Principles to guide Council’s actions and decisions
- Pathways to prioritise where Council will focus its resouces: we’ve identified transport, energy and waste as key sectors
- Partnerships with mana whenua, communities and businesses, as well as the Government and other councils, to achieve our goals.
